If you’re a new puppy parent, you know that finding a way to contain a growing dog is a bit of a struggle. Howie, a Bernese Mountain Dog from Minneapolis, was born just this past November. But he is already showing off his many talents over at @howietheberner. His owners actually had to set up a camera because they couldn’t figure out how he was escaping. And it turns out he’s a bit of a climber.
This video of the puppy vocally complaining at his gate is honestly pretty funny to watch. He just stands there yelling at the bars. But then, he decides he must do something about it.

In the video, we see the puppy bouncing around on his hind legs at the gate. He does this for a while, and it’s clear that he is frustrated about his access being restricted. And then, Howie just plops down on the floor. At first, you may think he has given up, but he is just taking a second to plan his next move.
The video shows the puppy using the grill design of the gate to get some leverage. He wags his tail and then just leaps up and hooks his hind paws into the metal hexagons. The whining is non-stop and it is a very loud complaint. But his hind legs are slowly climbing higher.
And once he gets enough height, he pushes his upper body forward. Et voila! He is on the other side. “Haha suckers,” the text says, as if reading his mind. Howie looks satisfied and comes right up to the camera for a quick sniff before running off. There is a reason why his mom thinks he is a special guy.
Over a thousand people have liked the clip so far. People are calling him a clever boy. One person rightly says that where there is a will, there is a way, while another mentions how he just climbed right over like a pro. “Locked up, they won’t let me out,” his mom wrote in the caption. However, Howie definitely found his own way out.
